Technical SEO - the foundation for your optimization

Having trouble understanding what's keeping you from achieving top rankings on Google? It could well be that it's technical shortcomings that are preventing your site from being read and indexed correctly - and that's where technical SEO comes in.

In this post, you'll get a deeper understanding of the different aspects of technical SEO.

What is technical SEO?

Where on-page SEO is all the search engine optimisation users can see, technical SEO is all the work users don't see. But Google does!

If you think of a website as a house, technical SEO is the foundation that keeps the house firmly planted and not swaying. Without a solid foundation, you can build something so beautiful, but the result will often be mediocre.

Technical SEO is therefore an important element if you want a website that ranks solidly in Google's algorithms.

Work areas in technical SEO

Work areas within technical SEO are wide-ranging and include:

  • URL structure: optimise the URL structure so that it is logical, clear and relevant for both users and search engines. Remember your canonical tags, if applicable.

  • Sitemap: create and update your sitemap to give search engines information about your content and which pages to index.

  • Fast loading time: Optimize page load time to improve user experience and search engine rankings.

  • Responsive design: make sure your website works optimally on all devices, including desktop, tablet and mobile.

  • HTTPS: Use a secure HTTPS connection to protect user data and improve search engine confidence in your website.

  • Image optimisation: optimise the images on your website to improve load time and search engine understanding of your content.

  • Troubleshooting: run regular troubleshooting tests to detect and fix technical errors and problems on your website.

  • Indexing: to rank high on keywords, you need to make sure your pages are indexed. In case this does not happen automatically, you need to submit your pages for indexing.

  • Redirects: avoid "dead links" and error pages by redirecting pages that have had their URL structure changed.

Good tools for technical SEO

There is often disagreement among SEO specialists when the conversation about the best SEO tools gets underway. There are a ton of options (and most can do exactly the same thing), so try your hand and find your own go-to tools.

Examples of tools you should try:

If you want to know more about good tools you can use in your SEO strategy, you can read my colleague's post "Seven cool SEOtools- the webmaster's most important tools". Several of the tools listed are elaborated on in the post.

Does your website have toxic backlinks?

It has never been more important to have your website's backlink profile under control. In December 2022, Google rolled out their "link spam update" - which means your rankings could really be penalised if your website gets links from other malicious websites.

Facts about "December 2022 Google Link Spam Update"

  • The update aims to combat spam and poor quality links that affect search results.

  • The update focuses specifically on links created with the aim of manipulating rankings in search results.

  • Google says sites with poor content or linking practices can expect to see a drop in their visibility in search results.

Want to know more about toxic links? Then you can read more in my colleague's blog post "Toxic backlinks - poison for your website SEO". He goes into detail about what it is, how it can affect your SEO, and not least how to get rid of them.
